Powertrains & Performance
The fourth-generation Highlander packs more horses under the hood with a new 295-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 engine. The new base engine overshoots the outgoing one in performance by 110 horsepower.
The new Toyota Hybrid System in the 2020 Highlander Hybrid combines a 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine with two electric motors. The system is more compact and more efficient than before, now achieving a best-in-class 36 mpg combined. That’s a 17% increase in fuel economy over the outgoing Highlander Hybrid.
Active Safety Features
Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 will now become standard on all models. The advanced safety suite packs a vast range of active safety technologies, including:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
- Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
- Automatic High Beams
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
- Lane Tracing Assist
- Road Sign Assist
The next-generation Highlander will also replace the old standard 6.1-inch Toyota Entune™ touchscreen with an 8-inch Toyota Entune™ 3.0 touchscreen with access to Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa. The Highlander Platinum get upgraded to the largest-in-class 12.3-inch Toyota Entune™ 3.0 touchscreen display paired with the 1,200-watt JBL® Premium Audio System and integrated navigation.
